The
Ministry of Communications as part of the e-Ghana Strategy is implementing an
integrated e-Immigration system that will enable the regulation of entry into
and exit from Ghana and also provide a case management system for permit
processing.
This
follows a contract signed between the Ministry and a joint venture of Messrs
Gemalto (France) and Avalon Biometrics of Spain in January 2013 for the
redeployment of an e-immigration system in the country.
The
project, when completed will meet the current and future needs of the Ghana
Immigration Service (GIS) and improve on the quality of service delivery they
offer to the public.
The
Minister for Communications, Dr. Omane Boamah, made this known during a visit
to the Joshanti Training Centre at Asylum Down, Accra, as part of a one-day
working tour of ongoing projects under the Ministry.
Ten
set of e-gates will be installed at the Kotoka International Airport as part of
its current redevelopment. e- Gates are state-of-the-arts machines that can
automatically scan traveller’s passports and allow them access as part of
immigration processes at the airports.
The
scope of the e-immigration project includes the design, development, supply,
installation, implementing, testing, commissioning and maintenance of a robust
and secure border control system and visa issuing.
The
Minister’s working tour also included inspection of ongoing works at the
Business Project Outsourcing (BPO) offices , the National Data Centre and
the yet to be completed Headquarters of the National Communications Authority
(NCA) all in Accra
