MTN Mobile Money



To Register For MTN Mobile Money
1.      Grab a valid photo ID (voter ID, Driver’s License, Passport, NHIS, National ID)
2.      Go to the nearest MTN Mobile Money Merchant.
3.      Complete registration booklet and ask for a copy
4.      You will receive a prompt or SMS after the Merchant has successfully capture your details

Option 1 (SAT Menu)
1.      Go to “My MTN” on your mobile phone and Select “Mobile Money”
2.      Select “register” and enter your Photo ID type and number
3.      Select and repeat your Mobile Money PIN (4digits)
You will receive a welcome message on your phone keep this Mobile Money PIN confidential

Option 2 (USSD)
1.      On your phone: Dial *170# and select ID type (e.g. 1 for Voter, 4 for Passport, etc.)
2.      Enter ID Number and press Ok/send
3.      Enter MM Code (4digits)
4.      Confirm selected MM PIN. Keep this Mobile Money PIN confidential. Wait for a successful feedback through SMS.

What is Mobile Money Wallet?
It is the personal and confidential place on the mobile phone where your cash is stored safely for all your cash transactions.

Load Wallet (Cash In)
1.      Go to your nearest Mobile Money Authorized Merchant.
2.      Hand over cash to Merchant.
3.      Merchant enters your MTN number, repeats your MTN number, the amount, Merchant’s user ID, and Mobile Money PIN.
4.      The system will debit the Merchant’s Mobile Money Wallet and credit yours. You will receive a confirmation message of the successful loading.

Transfer Money to a Mobile Wallet (P2P)
1.      Make sure you have sufficient money in your Mobile Money Wallet.
2.      Go to “Mobil Money” menu, select “Transfer Money” and “Mobile User”
3.      Enter and repeat receiver’s mobile number, and amount, reference e.g. “Gift from Kwame” (optional), confirm details and enter Mobile Money PIN. You will receive a confirmation message of the successful transfer.

Transfer Money to a Non-Mobile User (A2C)
1.      Make sure you have sufficient money in your Mobile Money Wallet.
2.      Go to “Mobile Money” menu, select Transfer Money” and “Non-Mobile User”.
3.      Enter amount, secret code, repeat secret code, confirm details and enter Mobile Money PIN.
You will receive a token (a 12-digits serial number via SMS).
Communicate the token and secret code to the receiver to cash out the money from a Mobile Money Authorized Merchant.

Buy MTN Airtime
1.      Make sure you have sufficient  money in your Mobile Money Wallet
2.      Go to “Mobile Money” menu and select “Top Up Airtime”
3.      Enter amount
4.      Enter and repeat mobile number (optional if own phone), confirm details and enter Mobile Money PIN. You receive a confirmation message of the successful MTN Airtime Top up.

Buy MTN Airtime (USSD Option)
1.      Dial *170#, enter 3 and follow the prompts.

Money Transfer from Merchant to Mobile Money Wallet
1.      Grab a valid photo ID and go to a Mobile Money Authorized Merchant.
2.      Hand over cash to the Merchant
3.      Merchant will enter and repeat the receiver’s mobile number, the amount reference (optional), Merchant User ID and Mobile Money PIN. Both receiver and Merchant will receive a confirmation message.

Withdraw Money (Cash Out) from Wallet
1.      Go to a Mobile Money Authorized Merchant
2.      Go to “Mobile Money” menu on your phone.
3.      Select “Allow Cash Out” and turn “Cash Out” on
4.      Merchant will enter and repeat your mobile number, the amount, Merchant User ID and Mobile Money PIN
5.      Confirm Cash Out on your phone and enter your Mobile Money PIN.
6.      When transaction is confirmed, Merchant will pay you the money
7.      You will receive a confirmation message of the successful Cash Out.

Allow Cash Out (USSD User)
1.      Dial *170#, enter 4 and follow the prompts

Withdraw Money (Cash Out) with Token and Secret Code
1.      Make sure you have the Token and secret code
2.      Go to a Mobile Money Authorized Merchant.
3.      Present your photo ID and token to the Merchant.
4.      Enter you 4 digit secret code
5.      When the transaction is confirmed, the Merchant will pay you the money.

Managing your Wallet (SAT Option)
How to check your balance
1.      Go to “My MTN” on your phone menu and select “Mobile Money”
2.      Select “My Wallet”
3.      Select “Check Balance”
4.      Enter your Mobile Money PIN
5.      You will receive you current & available Balance on your phone

How to check your Mini Statement
1.      Go to “My MTN” on your phone menu and select “Mobile Money”
2.      Select “My Wallet”
3.      Select “Mini Statement”
4.      Enter your Mobile Money PIN
5.      You will receive you Mini Statement

How to change your Mobile Money PIN
1.      Go to “My MTN on your phone menu and select “Mobile Money”
2.      Select “My Wallet”
3.      Select “Change MM PIN”.
4.      Enter your old MM PIN
5.      Enter your new MM PIN
6.      Repeat your New MM PIN
7.      You will receive a message of a successful PIN change

Managing your Wallet (USSD Option)
1.      Dial *170#, enter 5 and follow the prompts.
2.      Input 1 for Check balance and enter MM PIN
3.      Input 2 for Mini Statement and enter MM PIN
4.      Input 3 for favorites and follow the prompts
5.      Input 4 for Change MM PIN and follow the prompts.
6.      Input 5 for My Web Screen No. and follow the prompts

Money Transfer from Merchant to Non-Mobile (C2C)
1.      Grab a valid photo ID and go to a Mobile Money Authorized Merchant.
2.      Hand over cash to the Merchant.
3.      Merchant will enter your ID number and the amount
4.      You will enter and repeat secret code
5.      Merchant will enter user ID and Mobile Money PIN
6.      The system will generate a token (12 digit number) which is given to you.
7.      You must give the token and secret code to the receiver o cash the money

Can I use Mobile Money to pay for my utility bills like electricity bills?
Yes. You can currently pay your ECG bills, DSTV bills and other TV subscriptions with MTN Mobile Money.

Bill Payment
The service enables subscribers to pay their bills (DStv, ECG & Post Paid) anytime, anywhere.
1.      Select “MY MTN” on your phone
2.      Go to Mobile Money
3.      Select Pay Bill
4.      Select ECG, DStv, MTN Postpaid, General Payment, School Fees & Follow the process.
You will receive a confirmation message of Successful payment.

Bill Payment (USSD Users)
1.      Dial *170# and enter 2.
2.      Input 1for ECG and follow the prompts.
3.      Input 2 for DStv and follow the prompts.
4.      Input 3 for MTN Postpaid and follow the prompts.
5.      Input 4 for General Payment and follow the prompts.
6.      Input 5 for School Fees and follow the prompts.
7.      Input 6 for next item on the menu and follow the prompts.

School Fees Service
This service enables parents and guardians to pay their wards fees instantly without any hassle
Here’s how to:
1.      Go to My MTN on your phone menu
2.      Select Mobile Money
3.      Select Pay Bill
4.      Select School Fees.
                    i.            Under Payment code, enter the School code followed by a space and the Student ID number (e.g. UG 1000408)
                  ii.            Enter your MM PIN (Name of student will be displayed)
5.      Click Pay now
6.      Enter a suitable reference (e.g. 2nd Term/Semester)
7.      Enter amount
8.      Confirm payment details
9.      Enter your MM PIN again

General Payment
General payment is MTN Mobile Money product that enables individuals or corporate entities to make payments for goods and services including online transactions.
It offers integration to the MTN Mobile Money platform with institutions who desire payment solutions.

What is MTN Mobile Money?
Mobile Money is a fast, simple, convenient, secure and affordable way of transferring money using a mobile phone. The service is offered by MTN in partnership with 10 banks.


What can I use MTN Mobile Money for?
Mobile Money can be used to send and receive money, top up MTN airtime, pay for bills (DStv, ECG, and MTN Post Paid Bills), buy life insurance, pay airline tickets, pay insurance premiums as well as pay for goods and services. 

Do I need to have a bank account to use MTN Mobile Money?
No. Mobile Money is available for anyone, no bank account is required. However you will need a bank account to be able to link your Bank account to your Mobile Money wallet

Who can use the Mobile Money Service?
The Mobile Money service is available to all MTN customers. Non-MTN users can also use the service to receive money transfers from registered Mobile Money customers.


How long does it take to get MTN Mobile Money?
The process should take up to10 minutes only


Is the Mobile Money Wallet PIN the same as my SIM card PIN?
No. The Mobile Money PIN is selected during registration for Mobile Money transactions.

What is different with MTN Mobile Money? If I already use Mobile Banking.
With Mobile Money, no bank account is needed to send or receive money. All you need is a Mobile Money enabled MTN SIM card and a mobile phone.

Can I use an existing MTN Prepaid airtime scratch card to recharge my Mobile Money wallet?
No. You cannot use an existing MTN prepaid airtime card. There will be a special scratch card for Mobile Money which can be obtained from our Merchants. This will be available in the future.

Do I need to have a minimum balance in my Mobile Money wallet?
No. Your Mobile Money account can contain any amount. The maximum is GHC10, 000.

Are there any service charges to maintain my Mobile Money wallet?
No. Mobile Money only charges for the transactions you perform.

Are there any transaction limits on the Mobile Money wallet?
Yes. Customers who are not registered on e-zwich will have limits on their transaction. The Daily transaction limit is GHC 1000.

Can I use my existing SIM for the Mobile Money service?
It depends. The service requires a SIM pre-loaded with the Mobile Money application.  MTN customers who don’t have such a SIM card need to swap to a new SIM that contains the Mobile Money application.  The Mobile Money Merchant will help you to determine if your SIM card contains the Mobile Money application.

Can I keep my existing MTN phone number if I register for Mobile Money?
Yes. You will keep your existing phone number when you register with a valid Photo ID (Voter ID, Passport, Driver’s License, National ID, and NHIS)

Will I be able to save my old contacts on the new SIM card if I do SIM swap?
Yes. You should copy your old SIM contacts to your phone before you do SIM swap. Alternatively, you can use MTN SIM backup device to copy your contacts and transfer them to your new SIM after the swap. You will be able to save 200 contacts on your Mobile Money SIM, just like any other SIM card.

Do all mobile phones support Mobile Money?
Yes. The Mobile Money application is registered on the SIM card and is independent of the mobile phone.

Can I use my Mobile Money wallet outside of Ghana?
Yes. The Mobile Money service works on roaming. However, you may be charged for the SMS traffic by the host network at International Roaming rates.       

Can I get overdraft facility on my Mobile Money wallet?
No. You cannot transfer more money than you have available in your Mobile Money wallet.

Can I use my Mobile Money wallet as collateral for borrowing money in a bank?
No

How do I keep my Mobile Money Wallet secure?
You need to keep your Mobile Money PIN secret from others. Memorize your Mobile Money PIN and do not carry it with your phone.  Never give away your Mobile Money PIN.  If you have reason to believe your Mobile Money PIN has been compromised, you can change the Mobile Money PIN in the Mobile Money menu.

What do I do if I forget my Mobile Money PIN?
Contact the MTN Call Center on 111 for assistance.

What happens to the cash in my wallet if I become deceased?
The cash will be paid to your next of kin.

Is my money safe?
Yes. Your money is stored safely in a special account opened for Mobile Money in the Participating banks.

What happens if my phone/SIM is lost or stolen?
Your money is safe. Your Mobile Money wallet is protected by your Mobile Money PIN. You should call the MTN Call Centre on 111 to block your wallet by first authenticating yourself. Thereafter you need to do a SIM swap and unblock your Mobile Money wallet by calling the Call Center.

Can I send money to someone who doesn’t have a mobile phone?
Yes. You can send money from your MTN Mobile Money wallet on your phone to anyone in Ghana; the receiver doesn’t need to have a mobile phone or be an MTN customer

Can I do Mobile Money transfers on the internet?
Yes. You can access and login to your Mobile Money account via the internet and carry out transactions.

Can I transfer money from my bank account to my MTN Mobile Money wallet?
Yes. You can perform this activity through one of our services called “Link to Bank Account”. The Link to Bank Account service offer subscribers the convenience and ease of withdrawing money directly from their bank accounts into their Mobile Money wallets anytime, anywhere.

Can I transfer money out of my MTN Mobile Money wallet to my bank account?
Yes. You can perform this activity through one of our services called “Link to Bank Account”

Can I use the service to buy airtime for my friends and relatives?
Yes. You can top up for friends and relatives instantly.

Do I have a specific time I can top up through MTN Mobile Money?
No. You can top up instantly anytime, anywhere.

Can I buy airtime outside Ghana?
Yes. The Mobile Money service works on roaming.
